Between 1993 and 2014 Hugh Beattie served in the British Army, initially joining as a trooper in the Inns of Court and City Yeomanry. During his time in the army, Hugh pursued his childhood interest in art when he was selected by 4 Rifles and 7 Scots to be their war artist for their 2007 and 2015 deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He has also produced many award winning works for the British Army, inspired by his tours to Bosnia, Rome, Penang and Helmand. Hugh has comprehensive background in formal arts training having studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design and Camberwell College of Art. Hugh specializes in painting portraits, architectural landscapes and a wide range of figurative works and has received a number of awards including the National Army Museum’s prize for ‘Best Military Subject’. Outside of work his interests include supporting English Craftsmanship, running, restoration, and Scottish dancing.
