Hugh - "I had the honour of staying at FOB FOLAD (Forward Operating Base) which is a modern type of fort, situated in the middle of Helmand Province at the edge of the cultivated flood plain of the river. In the afternoons I would paint from the Sanger (watch tower). This painting was painted entirely in-situ. The column of yellow is not from enemy action but from a mini tornado I noticed. It was a very peaceful place at that time of day. The GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun) is the standard man portable weapon for the British Army to use at Platoon level and has been in service since the 1960s"
